Sen. Ted Cruz and a cadre of Texas elected officials are in Rowlett Wednesday to view the destruction heaped on Rowlett by Saturday’s ferocious tornadoes.
Cruz, a Republican presidential contender, was joined by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, state Rep. Cindy Burkett, R-Sunnyvale, state Sen. Bob Hall, R-Canton, and Rockwall County Judge David Sweet on a tour of affected neighborhoods with Rowlett Mayor Todd Gottel.
In front of Rowlett City Hall, Cruz shook hands with Mayor Todd Gottel.
“My prayers are with you,” he said.
The tour of the damaged areas began on Rowlett’s Harbor Drive, where Gottel told Cruz about Saturday’s emergency response. Gottel said 23 were injured in Rowlett with primarily cuts and bruises.
As Cruz walked around the wreckage, he told a cleanup volunteer that he has relatives in the area.
“I have a lot of family in Garland,” Cruz said. “I’ve spent a lot of Christmases there.”
