Be very suspicious of the facts presented here. The author, Radley Balko, is a far-leftist radical paid pro-all drug legalization “writer” who has had materiel pulled from the TV networks due to lies.
He masquerades as a libertarian, but he really is a highly paid pro-drug mouthpiece.
There may be some truth to this story, but investigate it yourself. I wouldn’t be surprised if Balko’s paychecks were in Colombian Peso’s.
His point is the most innocuous of activities can have far-reaching consequences.
I doubt you’d be feeling enthusiastic about law enforcement after being held at gunpoint and they ransacked your home looking for evidence of a crime and they came up empty.
Cops could care less if you’re a model citizen as long as they have probable cause... which is exactly what this federal judge ruled.
If they make a mistake, it happens and this is often the result of failing to investigate a person of interest thoroughly prior to effecting an arrest. And Kansas was good-faith law enforcement.
looks pretty accurate here:

He includes a link to the court opinion which confirms everything he wrote.
I see the problem. Some druggie activist is the only voice calling the government to task, while the Conservatives are silent.
It was part of a much larger operation that did indeed catch the drugs they were looking for. The made a mistaje with this family.
At the time there were many reviews, articles about, and segments from the book published in the media and it was widely discussed at Free Republic.
One of the main topics of the book was the proliferation of SWAT that first began only in large cities, but now are found in most all small towns/counties. He also pointed out how SWAT is now used for code enforcement.
He also gave the reason why the police shoot dogs. They call it SWAT but is actually military weapons and tactics which requires that all distractions to the operation must be eliminated. A barking dog might not be a threat but can "distract" a SWAT or even an individual officer.
What work I've read of his is meticulously documented and sourced. My take is that the process of research jaded him so much to the drug war that such is how his opinion now appears.
Actually, the left hates him: http://shameproject.com/profile/radley-balko/.

He should work for free?
has had materiel pulled from the TV networks due to lies.
Can you document this claim? I Googled and haven't been able to.
And it doesn’t bother you that *he* is more concerned about a government seizing government control and authority via the “war on drugs” than you, who presumably self identify as conservative?
So tell me, would you defend the police even if they released a police dog on a seventeen month old girl?
