Obama will probably respond by reminding Iran how tough he was with climate change rhetoric in Paris!
A president with any pubic hair would have blown at least one military facility in Iran to smithereens and demaded an apology or blwo up some more.
And the principal fact is that the price of a US Aircraft Carrier is utter annihilation.
Either with nukes, or other means, depending on what is necessary.
This is not a fighter jet or a tank. It's a Capital Ship.
Sovereign US territory.

However if the US for whatever reason attacked first, Iran under international law would have been justified to attack those capital ships. Yes it would have been terrible for everyone.
These were small, unguided rockets.
They were fired by small craft after the Iranians warned the vessels in the area that they were going to conduct the exercise.
They clearly did it as a propaganda coup, and to try and show something in opposition to the US.
But such weapons and craft are not any kind of serious threat to the carrier or its escorts.
IMHO, we should warn the Iranian that any more live fire exercise within 50 miles of any US carrier will result in the obliteration of the vessels firing the ordinance, the base where they came from and all ships at it, and any airfields in the near vicinity of said base that might otherwise support those vessels.
And then be willing to follow through and rain hell down on them if they try anything like that again.
But make no mistake, this exercise did not pose a mortal threat to the carrier or its accompanying vessels. Those weapons may have injured or even killed a few sailors had they tried to target the carrier at that range...but any actual attack would have resulted in (hopefully) a swift and heavy response. But you never know with Obama in office.
If they had fired a larger guided missile, both the escorts and the carrier have the means to shoot them down.
We simply need a President in office who will not take such guff off of the Iranian.

Two of the Iowas were built in the New York Naval Shipyard in Brooklyn and two were built in the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard in Philadelphia. Don’t think the Navy manufactured the steel. The steel in those ships probably came from
Bethlehem Steel located in Baltimore, MD.
Nevery liked the idea of our navy pushing carriers into the Persian Gulf. I mean Turkey was able to close the Bosporus to the combined British/French battle fleet in WW1 by laying a couple of mine belts and fortifying the coastlines.
The Brooklyn mill manufactured armor plate using nickel steel. All the armor plate mills are long gone.

Unfortunately you are likely correct about China. I’ll apologize in advance for the following side bar rant as it is disturbing to see what has happened to our county on many fronts.
China now wields a much bigger influence against the USA than they ever should have been permitted to have acquired. Our leaders gave them policies that enabled their financial clout to be used against us.
We have had a multi decade cabal of political incompetents and elites in the White House and Congress that sold out our national security, our borders, economy and tax base. The puppet string pullers such as NY bankers, CEOs and a global Chamber of Commerce always looking for cheaper labor by illegals, H1Bs have out sourced our security, manufacturing and production ability. Our incompetent leaders (as Trump has repeated many times)demanded nothing in return from China. If not for these traitors and fools the Chinese would still be using bikes, rickshaws and plying the seas in Chinese junks.
Now this same establishment wants to import the world’s population to the USA to purposely undermine our legacy and national culture. They and their media are pulling out all stops to put a halt to any Presidential candidate that would disrupt their plans and plundering.
Iran feeds Obama number 2, and he praises the taste and asks for more.
