He chain smoked. He also drank a fifth of Jack Daniel's everyday for almost thirty years. He slowed down on the drinking in recent years, but he still smoked.

I know people who drink that much and died in their 30’s and 40’s. Doubtful his liver was in good shape if he did drink that much.
