That would have been my solution. Flare off the leaking gas, until the deep fix can be put into place.
It would not have been the first well to have been capped off. The technology exists, and has been utilized many times.
Methane does not exist for very long in an atmosphere with 20% oxygen, so its ability to “trap” global warming is a little suspect. The average swamp probably gives off more methane than is being leaked, even under pressure, from this well.
