When President Barack Obama first took office in 2009, he was expected to be an adversary of oil and gas companies, seen as polluters of the environment. He hasn't been.
Last week, Mr. Obama helped the industry achieve its biggest priority of the past two years: the lifting of the 40-year-old ban on oil exports, which he signed into law as part of broader spending and tax legislation.
The White House helped negotiate lifting the ban with Congress in exchange for temporary renewal of tax credits for wind and solar industries--energy industries that provide electricity and for the most part don't directly compete with the oil industry, which provides transportation fuel.
Mr. Obama's signing of the bill prompted the American Petroleum Institute, the nation's largest trade association representing all parts of the oil and gas industry, to issue a rare press release cautiously praising his role: "The president's decision to end the 70's era crude export ban will benefit consumers and enhance our energy security."
Meanwhile, environmentalists criticized Mr. Obama for the move. "It's taking us in the wrong direction," said Michael Brune, executive director of the Sierra Club.
Mr. Obama can't take credit for the oil and natural-gas boom, but it has taken place on his watch. Since January 2009, when he took office, oil output in the U.S. has shot up more than 80% thanks to hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, and other drilling technologies. Natural-gas production has risen nearly 30%.
The oil-export shift was the latest in a long run of decisionsâwith the exception of Mr. Obama's move to reject the Keystone XL pipeline--in which the president took a lighter touch on the oil and gas industry than many expected.

“Friend”? by opposing the extension of a key link in international pipelines? by actively limiting the offshore drilling? by passing ever more regulations on the “environmental” impact of drilling? by refusing to grant oil leases in Federal lands?
Now we know he actively is working to destroy any and all coal production in the US, but for now, that is the low-hanging fruit. The other sources of “fossil fuels” will be the next level of attack.
If he can’t stop it, it doesn’t mean he supports something.
What gives with such a mind numbingly stupid editorial coming from the WSJ?
More a friend to Saudi oil.
The WSJ comes out of the closet to rehabilitate the Obama administration.
Life imitates art!
“Last week, Mr. Obama helped the industry achieve its biggest priority of the past two years: the lifting of the 40-year-old ban on oil exports, which he signed into law as part of broader spending and tax legislation.”
No. What Obama got is full GOP capitulation in exchange for a removal of oil exports which will be brought to a screeching halt by the EPA and the envirowhackos.
That ain't gonna happen anytime soon on our watch.
Obama Has Been More Friend Than Foe to Oil Industry
***********************************************************************
Oh, gag me with a spoon. The “Oil Industry” has made great strides but each stride was made IN SPITE OF OBAMA & HIS REGIME, NOT BECAUSE OF IT. The Obama regime has put as many roadblocks down for the oil industry as it could get away with.
And WTF has been happening with the WSJ. Any further leftward drift and I’m cancelling my subscription—both “hard copy” and digital.
Energy 2020: A vision for America's energy future", February 2013.
An exclamation point to your spot-on statement
Boy oh boy, the WSJ has really jumped the shark.
Ah, I see you found the nugget of truth between the lines.
Bullcrap
What a s t r e a c h
AYSM??? Our offshore petroleum industry in the Gulf is on it’s ass. Sprawling fabrication yards in Morgan City are sitting idle, work has stopped on new construction of offshore support vessels. Hundreds of other vessels that were working are stacked. The largest offshore commercial diving firm that supports the industry just sold all their American assets at a bankruptcy auction. That’s just for starters.
That WSJ author needs to get her head out of her ass and take a trip down hwy 90 through Houma, Morgan City and up to Lafayette and talk to some people.
Friend huh?
Anyone remember what he did to BP?
And now Exxon/Mobil is being politically targeted for being
“climate deniers”.
