So if a generally leftwing, Pollyanna government all of a sudden turns into a police state then the people will generally fall in line.
We have a healthy suspicion of authority in America that sometimes makes it more difficult to crackdown on criminals when we need to, but also makes it a bit more difficult for the government to crackdown on citizens whenever they like.

No, the bigger governments in Europe do not crack down on crime any better than in the USA, whose government(s) turn a blind eye to crime when left-wingers are in power actually.
