And so, an unlikely year in US politics comes near to the end with Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump sparking a debate about Yiddish semantics.
It all stems from his use of the word "schlonged" against Democratic challenger Hillary Clinton.
Referring to her defeat by Barack Obama in the 2008 primary race, he told supporters in Michigan: "She was favoured to win and she got schlonged, she lost."
Use of the word, which is from the Yiddish for penis, has been criticised but Mr Trump hit back on Twitter.
"Once again, #MSM [mainstream media] is dishonest. 'Schlonged' is not vulgar. When I said Hillary got 'schlonged' that meant beaten badly," he wrote.
So was he correct to suggest it is a neutral, commonplace saying? Mr Trump tweeted that the phrase had been used in politics before, to refer to an earlier Democratic campaign.

Trump just picked up the Yiddish vote.
BBC trying to understand Yiddish. Pathetic.
It was an off the cuff comment that’s really being overblown. he was just saying that she got screwed by Obama in the 2008 primary election without using the word screwed. These things happen when you don’t have a teleprompter and you have intense comradery between the audience and the speaker and “schlonged” is really pretty inoffensive regardless of anything else. Give me a break.
Imagine the hell the liberals are going to raise in the fall when somebody says that “The Clinton campaign has petered out.”
The media loves to obsess over Trump’s words, while paying no attention to murders, rapes and assaults by their favorite victim groups.
Can’t we all get a...
I think this was pretty smart of Trump (to use "schlong"). Not only did it keep him in the news, but it increased his appeal to Jews, Noo Yawkers, ethnic city dwellers across the country, and to many, many outer borough sorts that, though not Jewish, understand, love, and use Yiddish words.
Plus, it further alienated the MSM from regular Americans.
Imagine the uproar if he’d have said “close but no cigar.”
Frankly, here’s what I find MORE disturbing - the use of the F word by the younger generation is epidemic, commonplace. What Trump said was mild, almost unnoticeable in that context.
The Hillary and Left feigned outrage is so phony it’s hilarious.
LOL.
i just looked at a poll on CNN. Trump and Cruz together are taking 58%.
The establishment must be very sad....
Looks like the MSM is going off all half-cocked on this.
Paging Anthony Wiener! We need a subject matter expert on this.
I heard a commentator say on Don Lemon's show that the press has no room to complain about Trump when Hillary's husband had turned the Oval Office into a frat house and an intern into a humidor.
What would the media have said if it was stated:
“Hillary just lost her ass!” They wouldn’t have said a word about it....anything to make news, even if they have to LIE about it, all of it, any of it, some of it, LIE, LIE, LIE, that’s all the media does!!!!
All that Trump needs to do is to quote from various books written by Secret Service agents who guarded the Clintons - the language used by Cankles makes “schlonged” look like even less than the very little that it is.
“What I do with my schlong is MY business,” Peter O’Toole in My Favorite Year.
The word comes from “Schlange,” the German and Yiddish word for “snake.”
LOL....love it.
Ding, ding, ding - we have a thread winnah!
