Race makes people crazy, but often not in the way you’d expect. A nation watched wide-eyed as Melissa Harris-Perry of MSNBC complained that the Star Wars franchise was racist because the major villain is “black.” Darth Vader is black in the sense that Johnny Cash or Ben Roethlisberger or certain figures from Arthurian legend are “black” — white guys in black outfits — so people kept waiting for Harris-Perry, “America’s foremost public intellectual,” to crack and let us know that she was joking. But she wasn’t joking.

One cannot imagine what she’d make of that Adolf Hitler/Darth Vader episode of “Epic Rap Battles of History,” in which the Nazi dismisses the Sith and his off-brand Stormtroopers: “You leading an army of white men? Disgraceful.” And, of course, in the latest installment, The Force Awakens, one of those white men turns out to have the black face of English actor John Boyega.

This isn’t the sort of thing that drives people nuts: If you’re breaking down the hidden racial significance of Darth Vader’s black armor, you’re already there.

Years and years ago my sister worked in retail. A black woman gave her a check to make a payment to her account.

My sister looked at the check and told her she was sorry but she could not take the check. The woman started to rant and rave that my sister was racist and would not take the check because she was black.

My sister looked her right in the eye and told her very calmly that she could not take the check because it was made out to Montgomery Wards and she was in a Mervyns store.

The woman took the check and walked away without saying a word.

The term racist no longer means what it once did. If I, being a white person, discriminate against someone based on their race, like voting for or against a person based on their race, then that is racist. But, if a black or Hispanic person votes for a candidate because they are black or Hispanic, then that is not racist. The act itself isn't racist. It is only that you are white that makes something racist. I've been told that only white people can be racist and that all white people are racist, no matter how they act, think or feel, they are racist because they are white.

The term racist is now synonymous with being white. No more, no less. And, we shouldn't hold it against people that they were born that way and had no choice in the matter. So now, being called racist is the same as being called white, which doesn't upset me at all. I'm past all this crap and since there is nothing I could ever do to about it anyway, I'll just live my life and treat people as individuals, some good, some bad.
