How To Stop Donald Trump? A Lesson From Louisiana
Boston Globe ^ | December 19, 2015 | Joanna Weiss

Posted on 12/19/2015 4:40:42 AM PST by Jim Noble

So much for the establishment's efforts to stop Donald Trump. So far, nothing's working - not a thousand earnest think pieces or Jeb Bush's gripes in the latest debate. Not the wrath of news anchors and late-night hosts, who still can't resist booking Trump on their shows, but have started to get ornery during the interviews.

So maybe it's worth looking back to 1991 Louisiana, when establishment Republicans and Democrats banded together to defeat a popular, populist, problematic gubernatorial candidate named David Duke...

I spoke this week to some veterans of the anti-Duke battle, who told me they've been talking up this very idea, while noting that the parallels aren't exact. As hard as it is to divine Donald Trump's motivations - as much as his Bulworth act can sound like bigotry, and possibly is ...

Would a little more digging into Trump's past, plus a loud dose of Louisiana-style dark humor, accomplish what all of the hand-wringing hasn't?

The media loves the cash, but they hate Trump with a passion.

As a former NYer, I have followed Trump's relationship with the media for over 35 years.

This is why Trump calls them liars and scum at the beginning of every rally and they refuse to pan the room to show how large his audience is.

They could even re-use the old bumper stickers from the Louisiana race - “Vote for the Crook - It's Important.”

mike, you’ll see.....I’m right on this. What do you think “taking care of everybody” means? It means GOVERNMENT doing it. What do you think “I’m going to be fabulous for women’s health care” mean if not big government?

Any lame brain can be for the obvious state line thing....sheesh.....but this is a man who described himself as A LIBERAL ON HEALTH CARE. Not that long ago.....ignore at your (our) peril!!!!

Exactly. My husband volunteered for Vietnam, two tours, and his younger brother lied about his age to go there, where he lost his life--my husband, who is the least "wishy-washy" person I've ever known, and always sticks his own principles, has said Vietnam was in his opinion a mistake, especially considering how it was conducted.

Keep in mind Trump may be a Freeper.

He (or one of his lieutenants) should be. They might learn something.

Look at it this way: channel your inner Donald and answer this question: ““Mr. Trump, you’ve praised Vladimir Putin as a strong leader who gets things done through government - and you’ve talked about your ability to lead and to use government to get things done….so do you believe at all in the concept of limited government - and if so - where do you have plans to reduce the size or power of government?

Absolutely right.

This is just killing Jeb (that he can't find some trash to take Trump down).

I’m not drifting left, I hope anyone who knows me knows that my bedrock fundamental social conservatism wouldn’t allow me to do that, I just couldn’t. But it doesn’t take a genius or a deeper thinker than I’ll ever be to see that both sides are all in on global, centralised power.

And that’s whether they even realise it or not (that they’re all in on globalised, centralised power).

In a nutshell....most of us who are anti trump are because we absolutely do not trust him to be right most of the time because his entire life history states otherwise.

“Tells us something about Louisiana.”

Like what? Hillary Clinton is running for the presidency. Does that tell us something about Louisiana?

That was 1991, a far different America than we have now.

The “republican establishment, and. Democrats...” Banded together, but Trump has the momentum of the people, and the people now have learned the tyranny of the combined republican establishment, the democrats, and the media.

In 1991 we didn’t have the Muslim problem, no did we have an America that had been taken to its knees by the Muslim-in-chief...in 1991, not only would Duke been rebuked as president, but so would have Barack HUSSEIN Obama.

A LOT of things are different now, and some of those old ideas just won’t work anymore. He’s no David Duke. When he speaks of immigrants, it’s about the crimes, Muslims, it’s about the terrorism, and having listened to most all of his speeches, he barely says anything about blacks, at all.

It’s just the left, digging their old “racism hammer” out of the dust bin and brushing it off to again batter a conservative. It used to work better, but now it’s about as effective as a “nerf” hammer would be.

But the progressives keep gathering in groups to work out their latest and greatest “dump Trump” schemes, but nothing is taking hold. So far, Trump has the people, and when you’ve got enough of the people, you’ve got everything.

where do you [Trump] have plans to reduce the size or power of government?

I expect that Trump will end up reducing the size and power of government substantially, IF for no other reason than eliminating waste, corruption and duplication. He KNOWS that agencies like the EPA, Department of Education, etc., are nothing but boondoggles and need to be eliminated.

I would also expect that he isn't going to be too terribly specific as to what he intends to cut back or eliminate because you never want to give the abysmal bureaucrats and paper pushers time to try and figure out how to preserve their own little fiefdoms before the axe falls.

Just my take on it, unless Trump somehow is stopped short of the nomination, we're going to see him sworn in as President, because he will eviscerate Hillary Rotten Criminal, depend on that.

No. trump folks just don’t care about his past. I mean, heck, if proposing a 14.25% wealth tax doesn’t get you disqualified as a Republican, WHAT DOES??

So what?

The GOP supports and full funds Obamacare.

They have zero credibility to oppose Trump on single payer a la national health care.

That ship has sailed. If they were principled conservatives, they might have a point.

They aren’t.
