With the stuff we went through two years ago, I understand the fear that a baby with severe risks will bring.
We were told we would lose Little Bear, then that she would be severely malformed. Many told me why my bride was on bed rest that “You should just try again”.
Our Doctor didn’t. Wonderful woman. Little Bear was born and air lifted to the NICU. She had breathing issues, but none of the life changing stuff we were warned about.
It doesn’t always happen that way, but if we had listened to the wrong doctor Little Bear would not be here.
There is no "homosexual gene," nor is there a "murderer gene." What there seems to be are genes that predispose people to become homosexuals or psychopaths. Not all people with this genetic predisposition become homosexuals or psychopaths, and not all psychopaths become violent criminals (many become successful and upwardly mobile if ruthless professionals - Steve Jobs had all the hallmarks of a sociopath/psychopath).
The legal and moral implications of this issue go beyond abortion. One question that never seems to be discussed is who is ultimately responsible for providing for adults with Down syndrome and other mental disabilities. Their parents are not legally bound to do so after age 18, so if they're not wanted and supported by family, they're left to become wards of the state.
My great Uncle Paul had a stroke in the 70’s, and died in the 1990’s.
He couldn’t move his legs, and spoke with a moan most of the time. My great aunt, a rather fiery woman, cared for her till the day he died. Paul had a good quality of life. One memory I had was sitting up with him and watching all star wrestling while my aunt was out at card club. He was a big Andre the Giant fan. We would eat popcorn and drink pop till she got home, and then she would yell at him for letting me “sugar up!”
I can’t think of my Aunt doing anything else, and Paul was a big part of the family.
Same mentality, some people grow out of it, some people embrace and revile in it.
Actually yes.
It is part of what makes us human that we would care for our offspring so long and with such loving care when to get rid of them is the animal way.
An animal in the wild will abandon a litter that did not come out right.
They will feed themselves first and leave what is left for the young.
Being human and not acting like an animal when animal is so much easier is praiseworthy.
Some of the sweetest and kindest people I have ever met had Down’s Syndrome.
There was a group home for them in California, and we just happened to do our
grocery on the same day. The people would chat with me and help me with my stuff.
I enjoyed complimenting them and smiling at them because it made them so happy.
Since we moved to another state, I have met more Down’s people. Also in the
grocery store, where I met a sweet man who was a box boy. He really did a great
job bagging the grocery, and nothing was ever missing, broken, or bagged poorly.
He was laid off a few months ago, and I really miss him. Sweet man.
A life is a life, and even a Down’s person can make a life for him or herself.
Aborting them is just as much murder as any other murder. They are very lovable.
I have written before on FR that there is a Down Syndrome man who lives in my neighborhood. He works at the local grocery store; and, has worked at that same store for decades. He uses a bicycle to get to and from work, he is friendly with co-workers and customers, he loves sports. His mother is elderly, and he is a help to her.
Roger Moore was the worst Bond ever.
I was skeptical of Daniel Craig, but I think he's almost as good as Sean Connery.
I like Craig more than Connery. Connery was never as much of an action Bond, and there was never that sense in his movies that he was going to lose to the evil villains. I’m sure that it had nothing to do with him, but rather with the times, as well as with the technology.
What makes the two of them head and shoulders above the others is that element of underlying violence, with a thin veneer of sophistication. You know that Bond is on the right side, but what he might do to complete his mission is never certain.
I believe we’re on the same page.
