The source of much of this pabulum is Johns Hopkins University, which has been running a statistically-based "throwdown quote"/"pull quote" fabrication shop for 25 years.
For a long time, and possibly even now, Johns Hopkins had a consulting contract to Handgun Control, which is now the Brady Campaign, to gin up zingy one-liners for use in "debates" which would lead, under the right President, to universal firearm confiscation.
If we were to dissect that arrangement, no doubt (says I) we should find a convicted Fabian Socialist or Communist-trained agitprop wordsmith working on a grant from some Soros-funded "Org", hammering out phony correlations and statistical malaprops to keep the checks coming and make the world safe for Socialism.
