One thing about this article makes absolutely no sense. Denninger keeps describing monstrously EVIL behavior, and keeps repeating, “They’re not evil...They’re not evil.”

People who lie, usurp, and murder—including murdering hundreds of millions of babies around the world—are not evil?

I think he is getting at the vapid banality of their evil. These are not bigger than life villains. They are small, petty life sucking parasites.

I saw the Soviet Union while it still appeared viable. I had expected something like the Empire in Star Wars. Instead, it was a backwater of halfhearted, indolent grift and sloth. The only overpowering thing about it was the pervasive apathy and venality. It was a massive aggregate of pettiness and failures.

A character of Ayn Rand’s said, I think in We the Living, that people would look to the Soviet Union and think that they beheld some kind of colossus, when in fact it was merely a teaming mass of cockroaches.

This, I think, is the author’s point. The enemy is not epic, but rather mundane and squalid.
