Trump is not a conservative. Never has been never will be. He is a populist who has struck a chord with a lot of Americans who are sick of open borders, jihadists and 32 hour work weeks. He may or may not ride that to the White House but he will never govern as a conservative if he gets there. I believe he will get the wall built if he gets there so if its between him and the Beast I’ll vote for Trump but I will do it with eyes wide open knowing that Trump will be all over the place on policy.

This isn’t going away. Cruz is not going to get soft headed, and Trump is not going to become Freeman Dyson.
Trump creates his own vulnerabilities.
That is what happens in a campaign. Trump has started to go after Cruz. Cruz has to differentiate himself from Trump. If that is a fight, then "Let's get ready to Ruuuuumble."

If they were wrong all those times, how good are the chances you're right now?
The other problem is that at least some of those guys were near the average for presidents.
Bush II and Obama were definitely below average, but Bush I and Clinton I weren't among our worst presidents.
What are the odds that an outsider with a habit of shooting off his mouth would be substantially better?

My guess is he would outspend all but Obama. He would be a worst CIC than W but much better than Obama. He would be better than all on border security. The big question I have is how would he affect the economy. That I am not sure of yet.
