Think about how these government sources know Malik tried to contact Islamic extremists.

By leaking this, they just put a bull's eye on someone for political reasons and likely compromised national security.

She did not “try” to contact them. She did contact them and was in close communication with them and others.

Government leaker exposes information source but does not pursue information or leads. This is how the Obama administration works.
