My dad and I bitterly argued NAFTA when it was the new and shiny thing that had just passed. He was all stoked on the global economy, and I thought it would take away American jobs, independence, and substitute shoddy, inferior products for our own. Unfortunately, it was one of the few times at that age when I was right, and he was wrong.

I used to shock my elders by being utterly against ‘free’ trade since I was in high school. And I mean TOTALLY against it; tarrifs on Chinese slave-goods? yes please and thank you! Bans on products from nations that are hostile to us? Duh yes! Effective* economic sanctions? When do we get started?

*short of the ones on South Africa in support of the black terrorist groups, the world has not seen any of these on any real scale since WW2. I don’t count Cuba because it is a friendless crudhole with no allies, a total non-entity if it weren’t for tourism.
