Hate to brag on myself but I thought this when I first heard his statement. Start high and make your opponents bargain you down.

I learned to do that when applying for grants. Meet with the gtrantors and ask for twice as much as you think you’re going to get.

Right in The Art of the Deal Trump says, if you're serious in a negotiation about wanting something -- and, by the way, being serious is the only time to enter into it -- and if there's something dead certain you've gotta have, you have got to start out with the most outrageous position. The opener has got to be so outrageous that the compromise is exactly what you want. The opener is the most outrageous demand that you can make. So what old George is doing here is extrapolating Trump's negotiating skills and his technique with his political statements.

ping ...

I put highlights on my thread. Great lessons for us all. Going to my local Salvation Army to see if I can find a copy.

The only problem with this is that when he says he’s going to do something, I expect him to follow through. Making promises during a campaign and not keeping them is what has caused the anger that has propelled The Donald to the top. If he considers what he says during his campaign as talk, just to make the deal, then how is he doing anything different.

I expect he WILL deport (or cause self-deportation) of illegals. I expect he WILL halt muslims from coming to America, at least temporarily. I expect that he WILL get rid of Obamacare. Is all of this going to be compromised?

Really, really, good analysis.

The only question I have is: If Trump later “compromises” as this posits, will his more rabid supporters start calling him a “sellout” and a “RINO”?

There’s a boat load to be said about this tactic.

Liberals have been doing it to us for years and years.

Asking or demanding the extreme and accepting small victories along the way.

When negotiating, if your counter party moves even once in your direction, than they are likely to move more.

I think it may have been Stalin, Mao or Sun Tsu that said “When your sword meets resistance, withdrawal. When there is no resistance, keep pushing”.

At least something to that extent.

Plus Trump has effectively moved to the right of Ted Cruz who took the bait and said he does not agree with Trump’s position. That’s going to hurt Teddy in coming days.

Caller was dead on right, and what Trump's done in the process is expose just how stupid, ignorant, horrible these professional class politicians are, and why this country is in the shape it's in.

COMMON SENSE TRUMPS POLITICAL CORRECTNESS -- EVERY TIME!

Trump is killing it!

We are all so used to thinking politically, especially politicians. Trump is using business and common sense, something that has everyone except normal Americans befuddled.

Thank you. That is EXACTLY the problem if that is what he is doing. And really it makes some sense. How on earth do you go from Romney was mean to Hispanics to deport them all unless deport them all is an outrageous stance to negotiate down from?

He does follow through, but there are always cases that beg for special examination. That’s what Eric is saying.

Trump will end up giving amnesty to illegals who are good people and who will be good Americans. Not all illegals are gangbangers. Some of them are just dirt poor indigents from south of the border who want to work.

Trump will follow through on deporting them all, but he will allow some to come back legally. And they will love the USA for this because they will be able to walk in the open and feel legal and clean. And they will remember it was the Trump people and his party that granted them that whereas the sickening GOPe and democrats just want votes.

All political deals need to be negotiated. If something is totally one sided all the time, that is a dictatorship.

What others do is start where we would be comfortable with them finishing, then negotiate a worse deal from there. Trump is playing the game the way the dem’s do. Do you ever wonder why they are called progressives ... its because they don’t have to win every battle, they just need to move the ball a little in each battle in their direction. This is us finally getting someone who knows how to start moving the ball back in our favor.

Ted will be fine. He’s the smartest of the bunch. We just don’t know what his strategy is. We already had 32 governors who supported Ted’s now, current position. If he can get a few more on board then one could argue that it should become a nationwide doctrine. Right?
