Justice for a thief in the Old Testament was not death or cutting off your hand. People tend to get so mad they go overboard in what is just. An eye for an eye is usually enough.

The point about people being “extreme” is also in the Old Testament. When God brings judgment in the last days, those who do it are extreme and that makes God mad, too, so they are obliterated. Pretty deep subject actually.

It was not justice inappropriately applied by Man - it was God's justice, I figure.

But speaking as a man, I believe anyone who applies themselves to such an enterprise deserves what they get, either by Man's hand or His.
