This article focused on the history of REPUBLICAN primaries. It says that in the Republican party races, going back decades and decades, the December leader almost always wins.

This is barely a race at present. TRUMP is blowing out the field.

Democrats have different patterns than we have... they're 'unstable' in their choices - follow the herd types... If at the last minute the 'cool kids' switched sides, they follow. Remember democrats are a small number of white elites propped up by large numbers of inner city types.
