Whisper Campaigns and "Zipper Problems": How Jeb Bush's Allies Tried - and Failed - to Stop Marco

Whisper Campaigns and "Zipper Problems": How Jeb Bush's Allies Tried - and Failed - to Stop Marco Rubio.

An adaption from the forthcoming book, The Wilderness: Deep Inside the Republican Party's Combative, Contentious, Chaotic Quest to Take Back the White House.

On the night of the 2010 midterm elections, a portly, silver-haired Jeb Bush stood on a stage in the courtyard of Miami's luxe Biltmore Hotel, appearing to choke back tears. The beloved former governor of Florida was there to introduce the young conservative insurgent who had just pulled off a remarkable underdog victory in the U.S. Senate race.

"Bushes get emotional, so I'm gonna try my hardest," Jeb told the ecstatic crowd of Republicans. "My wife told me, 'Don't cry, don't cry.' But Marco Rubio makes me cry for joy!"

At the time, it looked like the culmination of a sturdy alliance and deep friendship - the proud mentor presenting his protege. Five years later, however, the two men are locked in a fight for the Republican presidential nomination, and recent headlines suggest the relationship has soured. According to the New York Times, Bush's super PAC has threatened to spend $20 million in a blitz of negative ads intended "to damage ... Rubio's reputation and halt his sudden ascent in the polls." And last month, an internal document leaked detailing the Bush campaign's efforts to cast Rubio as "a risky bet" for donors. "Those who have looked into Marco's background in the past have been concerned with what they have found," the document cryptically warned.

So, little Jebbie picks the 4th place target, and fails to even win that battle, and he still thinks he will be the nominee?

Pound the GOP with letters and emails saying they had better knock this crap off. If Trump goes 3rd party I am going with him- never to return

And demand that they fire Prebus. I would even prefer Michael Steele over this incompetent boob.

All of these ‘politicians’ behave the same way. The “party” is all a ‘club family’ to them. But, there’s no loyalty ‘within’ the family when you are trying to ‘climb up’ the family ladder.....it’s survival of the fittest... but...in the end they are all ‘loyal to the party’ and not ‘the people’.

On Tv a guy was discussing the Bush smear campaign against Rubio. Rubio’s people immediately took it out and corrected the Bush people. Bush is a slimey toad.

Jeb had his own zipper problems. Columba almost dumped him because of them.

Looking back, Rubio's debate comment something along the lines of, "You're attacking me because someone told you to" has context.

I think Rubio was personally affronted. It wasn't just politics.

I'm not a huge Rubio fan, not by any stretch, but Bush is sleezy in the Clinton way.

I’m no Rubio fan, but this kind of garbage has got to stop. If Rubio had this kind of problem, a line of women with some claim to a connection would have been trotted out by now, like they did with Herman Cain.

I won’t vote for Rubio, but no man needs his professional life and possibly marriage ruined by such lies.

The description of John Ellis Bush's "Multi-Millionaires Party" reminds me of the Batman episode "Batman Makes the Scenes", where millionaire Bruce Wayne hosts a fund-raiser for a worthy charity where a beautiful woman representing that charity jumps out of a cake engraved with dollar signs. The multi-millionaires then throw money at her.

In this case, the winning charity was "Miss Natural Resources"!

I am still pissed that somebody paid a lot of ladies to announce that Cain had sexually harassed them. But the second he dropped out, never a peep again. I hate that and I wasn’t a Cain supporter at all but that still stunk to high heaven.

The problem is that if Republicans don’t do it to each other in the primaries, the Dems WILL do it to the nominee in the general.

Better to have the eventual nominee vetted and his campaign team prepped to take the hit in the general, during the primaries.

It’s really sad they can’t do any better than these two. But it is fitting for the Stupid Party.

Fine, if there is something THERE. The Dems can just make stuff up out of nothing that hasn't been covered, and claim legitimacy on revisiting the old remors because "Even fellow Republicans said ...".

You can't run a race worrying about whatthe Dems will make up. Trump sure as heck doesn't.

I WAS a donating Cain supporter. I stuck with him for as long as he was willing to defend himself.
