If he had robbed Chase or tried to, a logical escape route would have been to head south, then west by the Japanese restaurant, then south to West Fillmore and over to Route 24, up to Woodland Park, and on to home.
Ideally, use a stolen car for the robbery, then meet a confederate behind King Soopers, ditch the hot car, and drive home with the confederate in relaxed obscurity. All before the cops arrive, obviously. Once the area is swarming with blue, it's too late.

He was probably dodging handgun rounds and firing back at the officers with a rifle.
The cops had rifles. There is a video showing an officer, believed to be the late Garrett Swasey, armed with a rifle sneaking around the north side of the PP building. It was made by an employee of the Center at Centennial, a rehabilitation hospital north of the PP building and the professional building housing the Colorado Hand Center, et al.
It’s likely IMO that the civilians who were shot were hit by police bullets, which may explain why details are sketchy at best.
Ozy Licano is at least one civilian who came close to getting killed who would differ with that. Also, at least one of the dead civilians was with someone who was also shot but survived. I expect the survivor can tell us whether she and her deceased friend were shot by cops. Then, of course, there is also ballistics.
IMO the PP had NO connection to the incident except as a building behind which to seek cover.
If he just wanted to shoot some folks, the King Sooper's would have made a far more attractive target. Or Center at Centennial — just walk in and open up. Or find a high place with a lot of people below, like Charlie Whitman. It's obvious Dear had a beef with PP, specifically.
Did Dear ever case the PP? If he had, he would have seen the level of security he needed to overcome to get past the lobby and reach the abortionists. Dear was one incompetent terrorist.
