They have forgotten one very important point -

As soon as they sue, they will be subject to extensive discovery. Their depositions will be taken under oath, and they will be required to answer interrogatories and identify and turn over documents.

They are hoping for a quick settlement, because their documents will not stand scrutiny. Here's hoping the city and school district paraphrase the Duke of Wellington and tell them, "Sue and be damned!"

I think sometime after the incident, school officials and/or police said they had additional information which would cast the incident in a whole new light, but that they could not release the info without the consent of the parents.

This lawsuit undoes all that, and makes it allowable for the school district and the police to disclose whatever they know in the context of defending themselves in court.
