If anyone is to blame for the shooting down of a Russian warplane on the Syrian border it is Vladimir Putin.
Ever since the Russian President came to power, we in the West have become used to the Russian military adopting an ever more aggressive stance towards the Nato alliance. Starting with the invasion of Georgia in 2008, which was launched in response to Tbilisi’s desire to join Nato, Russia’s military has been indulging in a clumsy attempt to intimidate Nato and its allies.

Putin’s been violating the airspace and territorial waters of many nations for about four years. Someone called his bluff.

This is a clear case of one man’s freedome fighter being another man’s terrorist. Isis is fighting the Kurds. Turkey is scared of the Kurds because they constitute a majority in some areas of Turkey and a substantial population in others. The Kurds, for valid seeming reasons, are upset with Turkish rule and seek to make their own state. Turkey can’t really fight the Kurds outright on a large scale as the Kurds are allied with the US (sort of. Obama hasn’t been much of a friend.) So Turkey is using Isis to reduce the Kurds.
One reason the US should not involve itself in the area is that it brings us into other country’s conflicts and nothing we do will result in bettering the situation of the US in the area or in the larger arena.
The winners write history. Guess we’ll see who gets what coming to them. Oh boy....time for popcorn now, for sure.
In times past, the price of oil would have skyrocketed over such news, but not now. Wonder when people are going to see that EVERYTHING is totally manipulated?
The oddsmakers in Vegas have Turkey vs. Russia as a push, lol.

Con Coughlin, my dear Armchair General, your opinion is duly noted, but I disagree. In my opinion, Russia is engaged in combat operations, and obviously if you knew anything about warfighting, you would know that mission accomplishment comes before troop welfare. Con, you mustn’t let your mind wander. It is much to small to be outside alone.
So we are trying to be on all sides, except Assad's, at the same time. Just wow....
Russia will do nothing.
Why?
Well, it has three options. The first option is to do nothing, with the reason for this being that, while Russia is not weak, it is not as strong as it wants others to believe it is. Action would mean the inception of a convoluted decision tree of reactions and consequences, with some paths leading to WW3, others leading to a scruff-up with Turkey, and a few even leading to Turkey doing nothing. However, as Russia cannot influence that decision tree, it will do nothing as it is not as strong as would be necessary for it to do as it likes (unlike the US, which - leadership dependent obviously - can genuinely do as it wants/likes without fear of immediate consequences).
The second option Russia can do is what I call 'posturing.' By this, what it would do is to (a) escort every attack plane with a couple of air-to-air fighters (and this would mean Russia bringing several SU-27/30s into the region), or (b) moving up a couple of S-300 platforms nearer to the area so that their long range radars can light up Turkish fighters (and the S-300 can target the Turkish airforce while they are WITHIN Turkey), or (c) both. You'll see the Russians constantly lighting up Turkish fighters with radar, but no missiles fired.
The third option is for Putin to basically unleash ROEs and let Russian fighters/SAMs take out any Turkish fighter that comes close, damn the consequences.
I suspect it will be option 1.
