Arizona Democratic State Senator Carlyle Begay announced Monday he is leaving the Democratic Party and becoming a Republican. Senator Begay is a Navajo Indian and represents an area of Arizona which encompasses the Navajo and Hopi reservations.
Begay told the Arizona Republican, "the Republican Party better reflects the values of self-determination and self-empowerment that he holds and wants to emphasize to his district."
To announce his decision, Begay released a two-minute video entitled "Change Must Happen Now" explaining his reasoning. Citing the failing education system, high dropout rate, crumbling infrastructure and unemployment rates "as high as 80 percent" in parts of his district, Begay told constituents he's found it is the Republican Party who has been willing to work with him to address these issues.....

....."With an open mind and heart," Begay concluded, "I clearly see the Republican Party as a party of progress, the party of opportunity, and moving forward - my party."
Arizona Republican Governor Doug Ducey greeted the news gleefully. .....

I’m pretty surprised!
The Navajos tend to be pretty lefty.
I do know quite a few Apaches that are conservative, or at least Republican, though.
Hate to disappoint him, but the GOP somehow never gets around to walking the walk.
The Democrats are losing their base; they’ll be identifying and appealing to a narrowing field of extremely defined, crackpot grievance groups to scrape out wins.
Wow.
They really are leaving the rez.
:)
The states have been doing yoeman’s work.
This is good news for Begay’s district.
I hope a lot more Dems see the light and flee to the Right.
There is hope for CA!
: )
It’s more evidence of how badly Obama has harmed the Democrat Party. This is the equivalent of a black Democrat joining the Republican Party.
Bravo!
That’s encouraging, CW.
We always get blamed for everything.
Maybe when Jerry and his kids are gone...
Wow.Ba-dum SSSSSSSSS!They really are leaving the rez.
:)
Glad I made you smile or laugh.
Things aren’t too funny anymore, are they?
My former next door neighbor is a member of the unfortunately named Tonto Apache tribe and a former 19D. When our current US Congresswoman, a Democrat, was first elected in a close race against a capable Republican candidate, he blamed the Navajo/Dineh. His assertion was that despite their alignment with the Republicans on coal, illegal immigration, abortion and most other social issues, you could always count on a Navajo to vote for the party who would provide the most welfare benefits. I have a feeling Mr. Begay’s time in office may be limited.
I think he’s been reading the smoke signals and sees that there will be a Republican Tsunami in 2016. I think a lot of marginal Democrats will get swept out of office next year.
Glad I made you smile or laugh.Oh, I'm not quite ready to give up on the funny side of the street. Even if a lot of those making the funnies aren't really kidding around.Things arenât too funny anymore, are they?
And perhaps the election season beginning in earnest will prove yet again how right Mr. Mencken was, when he surmised that democracy was that form of government whereby the common people know what they want and deserve to get it, good and hard, but I'm not sure who's going to be laughing. Other than those who laugh like Figaro that they might not weep. ;)
Unless, of course, you count P.J. O'Rourke. (The Democrats are the party that says government will make you smarter, taller, richer, and remove the crabgrass on your lawn. The Republicans are the party that says government doesn't work and then they get elected and prove it.)
Remaining a Democrat in his district was the safe choice.
Begay is the one taking a risk - if his standing with his constituents is solid, he could remain in office as a Republican and that would be huge.
Check out the video linked in post # 8.
All long-held Democrat places should follow suit.
Lol!
