Can Terrorists Really Infiltrate the Syrian Refugee Program?
The Atlantic ^ | 11/19/2015 | RUSSELL BERMAN

Posted on 11/19/2015 7:54:08 AM PST by SeekAndFind

Despite the current uproar, the U.S. has been resettling people fleeing war-torn countries for decades without trouble.

If you look solely at the U.S.'s long record of taking in refugees from countries torn apart by war, it’s hard to argue that national security should be a top concern in the debate over Syrian migrants.

In the 14 years since September 11, 2001, the United States has resettled 784,000 refugees from around the world, according to data from the Migration Policy Institute, a D.C. think tank. And within that population, three people have been arrested for activities related to terrorism. None of them were close to executing an attack inside the U.S., and two of the men were caught trying to leave the country to join terrorist groups overseas.

"I think I can count on one hand the number of crimes of any significance that I've heard have been committed by refugees," said Lavinia Limon, a veteran of refugee work since 1975 and the president of the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants. "It just hasn't been an issue."

Yet it is the issue now, as the Obama administration tries to fend off a revolt by Republican governors over its plans to resettle more than 10,000 Syrian refugees escaping the brutality of both the Islamic State and the Assad government. The coordinated attacks in Paris have fanned fears that terrorists could infiltrate the U.S. by slipping in among the refugees -- as might have occurred in the case of one of the Paris attackers.

As U.S. officials and refugee advocates point out, that has never happened in modern history. Not when the U.S. took in tens of thousands of Vietnamese refugees in the 1970s. Not when 125,000 Cuban "Marielitos" arrived by boat in 1980.

One of the Paris murderers was such an individual. Previous refugee movements were not deliberately (or very rarely) employed to place terrorists in foreign countries. This one demonstrably is, and the people doing it have announced that it is. Really, this isn't a serious argument and these aren't serious people. What does it take for the Atlantic to wake up?

What a extremely STUPID question, it doesn’t deserve an answer.

Poor little liberals and their poor math skills. It only took 19 to kill 3,000 at the WTC. One at Ft. Hood took out 13 and injured 32, etc. The earnest protestations of all the moderate muslims in the world don’t matter. It is the handful of violent extremists who matter. If we need to keep them all out to eliminate the minority the rest are insulating, so be it.

Consider the mafia neighborhoods in America. The less-than-one-percent who are “connected” are protected by the frightened silence of all the others. Some are relatives; some are close neighbors; a few identify with the thug life or get favors from the “made men”; but most are just scared to cross them.

The premise was framed all wrong. OF COURSE the terrorists are infiltrating the refugee stream from Syria, and exhibiting some of their worst terrorist behavior while in the transition - murdering and raping the widows, children, unaccompanied females, and lesser Muslims or non-Muslims all along the way, then disposing of these victims by throwing them overboard while at sea, or left for dead along the trek.

Plus whatever small arms or contraband they are smuggling at the same time.

Is the Administration committing to only draw refugees from the long term camps around Syria and using the existing two year plus application process? Or is it intentional to not talk about the current process to gage the acceptance of the illegal invaders of Europe as refugees suitable for entry into the US?

So the author’s conclusion is that they might, but we’ve not had “that bad” of problems yet. Never mind the daily litany of problems in Europe. This is the best argument the touchy-feely left can make for importing potential terrorists?

Most of the Vietnamese had fought alongside American troops, or were members of the former government of South Vietnam. They were facing certain death under the communist regime. Back in those days, the U.S. still believed in helping those who had helped us.

As for the Cuban boatlift, Castro simply emptied out his jails and prisons and sent them to America. They began streaming ashore in Florida and we had few options. Many were criminals and I’ve often wondered how many took up their old trade in the States. Others had friends and relatives already living in the U.S. who were able to help them assimilate.

Taking refugees from a country 5,000 miles away that has been torn apart by terrorism, jihad and civil war is a different matter. The Vietnamese and Cubans who came here were willing to assimilate and many have done quite well. Many of those leaving Syria (and other places in the Middle East) have no intention of assimilation; instead, they are coming to spread the influence of radical Islam and attack the west. In fairness, they are probably a small minority. But if only 2% are active terrorists and sympathizers, that will create thousands of new security threats for police and intelligence agencies that are already swamped.

Heard an interesting comment the other day from Fran Townsend, who served as Bush 43’s adviser for homeland security. She told an interviewer that the FBI is able to maintain active, full-time physical surveillance on about 60-70 suspected terrorists at any given time. And with electronic surveillance now greatly curtailed (thanks, Ed Snowden), there are hundreds of suspected terrorists walking among us, and the feds have no idea where they area.

Finally, I don’t recall any Vietnamese or Cuban refugee who was willing to strap on a suicide vest and murder scores of innocent civilians in the name of Catholicism.

[[The Tsarneav brothers were fully vetted refugees.]]

Exactly- this should be the main message of ALL the GOP candidates right now, and they hsoudl be HAMMERING this fact home until the public become aware of what a sloppy job government does in vetting people!

AND- just for poops and giggles, the GOP should also HAMMER home the fact that regardless of ANY vetting program- we know for a fact that muslims are practically commanded to lie to we infidels, and they will say anything to be allowed to come into this country, and once here- all it will take is a phone call from their comrades overseas to go all jeehad on us- they will be just biding their time- smiling to us in our presence, being somewhat polite- not making waves- UNTIL they receive a call ordering them to act against us

The Boston Marathon bombing is my example of Refugee program.

Oh no, you're wrong. The Wikipedia page for the Boston Marathon Bombing was stripped of the word 'refugee' as of Nov 18. They were "asylees". You silly, racist!

They infiltrated the Iraqi Refugee Program, and we had captured Saddam’s detailed dossiers on every citizen.
