Vladimir Putin, Leader of the Free World
By David P. Goldman on November 18, 2015 in AT Top Writers, David P. Goldman, Spengler
If Mikhail Bulgakov had come back to life and written a Levantine sequel to The Master and Margarita, he could not have devised a scenario more lurid than what we now observe in Syria. Russian President Vladimir Putin is now the leader of the Free World against Islamist terrorism, directing the efforts of France and Germany and setting terms for American involvement. Reeling from last weekâs massacre in Paris, France lacks both the backbone and the brute force to avenge itself against ISIS, but in alliance with Russia it will make a more than symbolic contribution.
In 2008 I endorsed Putin for the American presidency, in jest, of course. Now he is leading Americaâs president by the nose and directing the anti-terror efforts of France and Germany. No-one could have anticipated Putinâs sudden ascent to global leadership during the past several weeks. Russia is in the position of a a vulture fund, buying the distressed assets of the Western alliance for pennies on the dollar. Faced with an American president who will not fight, and his European allies whose military capacity has shrunk to near insignificance, the Russian Federation seized the helm with the deployment of a mere three dozen war planes and an expeditionary force of 5,000 men. One searches in vain through diplomatic history to find another case where so much was done with so little. As an American, I feel a deep humiliation at this turn of events, assuaged only slightly by Schadenfreude at the even deeper humiliation of Americaâs foreign policy establishment.

Who would have ever thought that one could say that without irony?
I’m sure “free” world qualifies.
Putin is a statesman who loves his own country.
Obama is a community organizer who hates his own country.
I guess he meant it.
Obama was too caught up in things like #BlackLivesMatter, gay marriage, tranny’s in the military and things like that to be concerned about world events.
Obama is 100% responsible for the rise of ISIS. He pulled out of Iraq too soon for political reasons against the requests of our military leaders. He took military action against non-threatening Libya which is now a failed state. He supplied arms to terrorists in Syria. The list is long of why he is responsible for the rise of these jayvee terrorists.
‘Iâm sure “free” world qualifies.’
I’m not sold on the idea that a free world exists anymore.
Oh my goodness, this is so true! I am beside myself with anguish and angst of this country since HE assumed office. It's a negative, downward spiral for American Power, Prestige and influence in the world! Who would ever dream that we would (in a bizarre way) admire that Soviet KGB POS over and above our so-called “leader”. Not in my wildest nightmares would I have believed that the American people would put HIM in power twice!

I don’t buy everything I read.
Russia is fighting against isis. The USA isn’t. Obama’s failures created a vacuum for isis to exist. He willing looked the other way when these jayvee terrorists came about.
It is the Russians blowing up their tankers and cutting off their money supply. It is the Russian actually killing some of them.
The USA did nothing but take pretend action against them.
Please take the time to read the articles at the links above. Russia is only partly fighting Daesh. You will find more articles here http://freerepublic.com/tag/by:admsmith/index?tab=comments;brevity=full;options=no-change
An interesting article. Thanks for posting. Saudi Arabia and Iran mentioned.
Maybe the USA can take up the slack since Russia has her hands full fighting al-Qaeda in Syria also - or do the anti-Russians in Syria types want us to forget al Nusra is al-Qaeda in Syria (among dozens of other jihad cells).
