BEAUMONT, Tex. -- Donald Trump says the tough gun control laws in Paris contributed to the high death toll during a series of terrorist attacks on Friday. The attacks, he added, also reveal the danger in allowing Syrian refugees into the country.
"You can say what you want, but if they had guns -- if our people had guns, if they were allowed to carry -- it would have been a much, much different situation," Trump said to cheers during a political rally at an arena in southeast Texas on Saturday afternoon. "I hear it all the time, you know. You look at certain cities that have the highest violence, the highest problem with guns and shootings and killings -- Chicago is an example, toughest gun laws in the United States, nothing but problems. So our country better get smart because we're not smart right now."
By making that comment, Trump doubled down on a message he tweeted in January, following a smaller-scale terrorist attack: "Isn't it interesting that the tragedy in Paris took place in one of the toughest gun control countries in the world?" As that dated tweet recirculated on Friday evening, the French ambassador to the United States, Gerard Araud, tweeted at Trump: "This message is repugnant in its lack of any human decency. Vulture."

I'm not sure how one differentiates between a "rant" and a speech. I saw Trump's speech in Texas. He is not as polished as a life-long politician. But what he says seems heart-felt and does resonate with people. Many of us are utterly sick of these eloquent but phony lifelong politicians.
Trump - spot on!
I think you referenced this.....but the snarky response from the ambassador was wrongly attributed to what he thought was a recent Trump twitter...
...when in fact Trump tweeted that way back in January
By god you’ve nailed it. Quickly, succinctly and spot on. Would make a great bumper sticker.
For every one of yours about Cruz I can come with a hundred about Trump. He was after all a life long liberal NY'er until just recently. He has held nearly every side of every issue at some time of his life. Which ever side has been of the greater advantage to him he was willing to hold, at least for a little while.
Hey, don't get me wrong I'm glad Trump is helping to displace the Washington cartel. I'm glad he has come to the light of liberty, I just think he should live by it for a couple of years before he becomes the most powerful man in the World. He seems to change parties more often than he changes wives. The past is the past, he must live with his. But for those of who claim to want liberty from constitutional rule, not edict or capricious musings -- how about we look for a conservative who has lived his creed for a while before the coronation.
Knowing the French a little, I would say that the ambassador was affronted by what he perceived as a lack of politesse or politeness. What Trump said was, of course, 100% correct, but he was impolite to mention it. Trump is plain spoken, not French.
I would hope the French understand that, when lives are at stake, it is time to fore-go delicacy in speech and get the job done.
It was pitiful..... no one with weapons to try and fight back. Just the police, and they wouldn’t try to get the killers because they were afraid the killers had bombs and would blow them up. But we’re suppose to feel bad for France.....
Donald Trump will very likely be America's next president and that's how the French ambassador speaks to him? So much for the fine art of diplomacy.
I never again want to hear how the diplomatic corps are supremely skilled at not stepping on toes while still getting their way and representing their countries in the best light.
Screw the French. I have no sympathy whatsoever for them. May terrorists kill every one of the dumb b***ards.
I thought it was better because it was not polished. It was real, Like having a conversation with him, and from the heart. No Teleprompter!
Oh I forgot what I really wanted to say :-) He was incredibly entertaining. Kept my attention for the entire hour and six minutes. A polished political speech could never do that
How old is that? 15 years ago when the ban was already in place and the Bush administration supported it? As Trump has said, his sons Donald and Eric are both avid shooters and hunters and have educated him over the last decade on the subject of gun rights. Smart people learn when they are wrong.
Try again.
Absolutely!
Since we’re talking about gun rights...what about what happened in Oregon and ‘wimp in the Rainbow Hut’ just had to go there, and the people didn’t want him, showed him they didn’t want him, and that was a ‘gun free zone’ but people forget don’t they?
GO TRUMP GO!!!
Was this written before the national background check? Sounds like it.
Trump's position on guns - from his book:
Concealed permits valid in every state
Felons and mentally ill should not have access to guns
Gun owners should be allowed to purchase the weapons that best fit their needs
The instant background check is a failure
You mean like at a Luby’s in Killeen?
Lots of tough talk. No one returned fire. No one.
Concealed carry was illegal then.
Lubys is the reason we have it now.
The NICS background check is not a failure per se, the main problem is that not all the computers can speak to each other. If that were solved then you are able to screen people more effectively.
You mean the Luby’s attack that was before concealed carry was legal in TX?
You know the attack that was the impetus for the CHL laws in TX.
Trump's point seems to be that only the law abiding are the ones being screened and the bad guys are just getting guns the way they've always done it - Steal them or get one from friends and family.
It is just another federal regulation that isn't accomplishing a damn thing.
