As I’ve said before (and got abused for) Trump is clearing the way for Cruz. Trump says “outrageous” things to see how they fly. IF Trump implodes, Cruz will take the best Trump positions and run with them.
Note that Trump hasn’t made any attacks on Cruz.
I think they’re in cohoots for a Trump/Cruz ballot. Who’s on top doesn’t make a big difference to me.

If Cruz plays nice with Trump in the run up to the primaries, maybe as President, Trump will put Cruz on the US Supreme Court. That would be another conservative justice.
Trump did say on O’Reilly this week that both Rubio and Cruz lack experience in the private sector and being job-creators. Just a couple weeks ago Trump wouldn’t say a bad thing about Carson. Look how that changed. Trump targets anyone who stands in his way to the nomination and he will savage Cruz if Cruz gets close. Then the conservative base will be split and at war with ourselves like we’ve never seen.
