I chalked up to being one of those “New York-isms”, like “What kinda schmuck am I?”. I agree, I don’t think it plays well in Iowa, but I don’t think there was any ill-will there. I think he was just talking off the cuff.

I donât understand Trumpâs strategery in asking âHow stupid are the people of Iowa?â My take is that what Trump meant to say, but it came out "wrong" through elision, was something along the line of, "How stupid does Ben Carson think the people of Iowa are?"
That just seems to fit given the context and how he's saying it.
