Is Rubio right that welders earn more than philosophers?

Wages are regional, I just never figured in CA a welder apprentice would get that little. Up here in ND McDonald’s burger flippers & Walmart cashiers get more than $10.00 per hour.

If the philosophers go on strike, they will bring the economy to itâs knees. Are those the ones/clowns picketing McDonalds demanding $15/hour?

philosophy grads Peter Thiel, Carl Icahn, and . . . Carly Fiorina.
Rubio said "philosophers", not philosophy majors.

That is wonderful. Rubio is right about vocational training. I was assigned to welding but was transferred a few days later to machine shop for one year. I will never forget the first welding class (I was 15 at the time). The teacher stood in front of the class and told us if we were idiots there was a good chance that we would kill ourselves as he pointed to the dozens and dozens of welding tanks lying on the floor in neat rows. That scared the heck out of me.

Yes there are different kinds of philosophy related to welding.
There are the Transcendental Ignosticists (TIG) and the Melioristic Intrinsic Gnosticists (MIG).
Among others.

Generalists like philosophy majors or English majors are rounded enough to be able to help you in many ways, not just a particular specialty.

Welders:
- Fix useful things that have broken
- Join things together that belong together
- Fill gaps and spaces with useful material
- Remove excess material and smooth out problems
- Have a vision for what "should be" before it is
- Design and build useful things from raw material
- Use a variety of techniques to accomplish their work
- Protect themselves from harm
- Clean up after themselves
Philosophy Majors:
- Teach Philosophy
- Go into Law
- Talk crap

Private sector start, some experience showing they know their stuff and then they make much more.

My guys make anywhere from 85 - 130k per year. Depends on the overtime and how much work a welder wants...

With engineers, usually (not always) college is involved. Rubio’s point is that a college education in and of itself does not necessarily guarantee a better financial outcome than the vocational path.

I don’t know. How much do unemployed philosophy majors make?

From one of my all time favorite movies - Max Dugan Returns - Matthew Broderick (grandson) asks Jason Robards (grandfather) “can you make a lot of money in philosophy”? Jason Robards reply - “Oh yeah, as long as you have the right one!”

Employers are telling the technology faculty that they are in the midst of a work force change over. Baby boomers leaving...they are looking for workers NOW. But it seems some kids want the $20/hr starting...that ain’t happening.
To: PIF
Well, I agree with you there. I’m sure you’ve heard the joke that ends with “... and the Liberal Arts major says, ‘Would you like fries with that?’”
To: Trapped Behind Enemy Lines
Not so. LOTS of $ to be made in the trades. One could starve to death on a professor’s salary.
To: doberville
University profs here in CA make buckoo bucks.
Far more than most blue collar workers.
