We always just shrugged it off and said, "Hey, look what some idiot did." and went about our business.
So much so that the truly squeamish were far better off paying a bit more to live "off campus." I recall practical jokes involving cultural insensitivity, low-grade physical discomfort, extraordinarily poor taste, and yes, even human waste. Depending on the circumstances, we'd either laugh our asses off, pay back the perp(s) with interest, or as you said, "shrug it off."
My particular residence hall "house" was known throughout the RHA as a den of crude lunatics, and shortly after I left, it was "broken up" by assigning members of a specific minority group to slots that had been vacated. They very quickly replaced basically harmless troublemakers with some very bad actors that eventually caused genuine problems.
