COLUMBIA, MO. - Melissa Click shut herself in her university office on Tuesday afternoon, and sobbing could be heard through the door.
A day earlier, the assistant communications professor at the University of Missouri had helped lead a multitude of activists forming a circle encompassing hundreds of yards to block reporters from an encampment on Mizzouâs Carnahan Quadrangle, following the resignation of University of Missouri System President Timothy M. Wolfe.
A video that went viral Monday evening showed Click calling out for "muscle" to help remove a student journalist from the area. The video sparked a national wave of criticism against Click and other activists.
At 5â¯p.m. Tuesday, Click emerged from her office and released a written statement apologizing for her actions. She said she had personally apologized to the journalists involved and expressed regret that she had shifted attention from the "students' campaign for justice."
"From this experience I have learned about humanity and humility," Click said.
By then, activists who had shouted "Hey, hey, ho, ho, reporters have got to goâ on Monday also had changed their tune. They distributed leaflets urging protesters to respect journalists' First Amendment rights and to welcome them.(snip)
An online petition calling for her firing was circulating. People had posted her phone number and email address on online forums. Someone had created a Facebook page titled âHey, hey, ho, ho, Melissa Click has got to go.â Police said she reported receiving threatening and harassing telephone calls.(snip)
Click wasn't the only faculty member who helped thwart journalists' access. Richard J. "Chip" Callahan, chairman of the Religious Studies Department, was standing behind students forming the blockade on the video. The video shows the students moving toward Tai. When he complained, Callahan said: "Don't talk to me. It's not my problem."
According to public records, Click and Callahan share an address.

Callahan, who said 'Don't talk to me. it's not my problem', is an Associate Professor and Chair of Religious Studies
"My primary interest is religion in America. These are especially interesting times for the study of religion in the United States as the discipline searches for new ways to tell the story of the nation's complex history of religious diversity and cultural interaction. Trained in folk studies, history of religion, sociology of religion, and American religious history, I approach religion through its lived expressions and practices. I am particularly interested in the ways that people creatively and constantly negotiate identity, significance, and power through religious idioms in the dense contexts of their everyday lives...I am currently engaged in a long-term research project on the religious worlds of seafaring, focusing initially on New England's whaling industry. This project takes me into realms of globalization, oceanic studies, and intercultural exchanges between Americans, Pacific Islanders, and others. It explores not only the work of whaling, but the impact of global networks and exchanges on formations of modern perspectives on religion as well."

Still NOT fired.
Exactly. She could have incited a riot with her words and actions....
Battery and attempt to incite a riot arent crimes at M.U...?
Typical bully. A Coward.
Sobbing because she got caught on video.
That’s moronic.whaling and religion? Google grief. This college is doomed.
You know....if you read this paragraph three or four times....you come to realize the guy knows almost nothing about religion of any type. He’s some physiological and social studies geek who gets into intercultural happy-feelings. I don’t know dimwit punk would pay $26,000 a year for tuition and board to get smart in something like this, but I can tell you that it’s more or less worthless in the real world unless you score a job with CNN or get some buddy to get you an insider job with university where you pretend to know something, but you really don’t.
The trustees of MU must have been on a seven year drunk when they hired the likes of Click and Callahan. What a horrible waste of the taxpayers’ money! Every one of them should be dumped and people with a little common sense should replace them.
How about a little muscle over here? She could have gotten the legitimate reporter hurt badly. She must go. Needs to work at Walmart.
Gee... the guy’s a bullhsitter who likes to go to the Pacific islands at someone else’s expense. Nice work if one can get it...
I agree. That’s got to be the most convoluted way of ‘studying’ religion ever.
“Sobbing could be heard through the door”, good grief what drama queens. Damage control.
Like all liberals, and most journalism professors, this woman is a violent thug. Their goal is the accumulation of power and political oppression.
Oppression is what these “protests” are all about.
And they are winning.
Because no Republican leaders have the guts to speak up and fight. Spineless twits like Jeb Bush and Mitch McConnell unwitting allies in the destruction of our freedom.
She didn’t need muscle, she needed a muzzle.
This thing started in 2010, when two students threw cotton balls on he ground.
For this, they were ARRESTED - for Second Degree Tampering, with a threat of upping it to a felony charge as a hate crime. In the end, the charges were dropped...but they were cuffed and stuffed for throwing cotton balls on the ground.
But old fashioned crime like inciting a riot are overlooked.
Completely agree. In typical liberal academia fashion, he’s living in a bubble.
Didn’t Trent Lott apologize?
Didn’t Jimmy the Greek apologize?
