WASHINGTON - The White House on Friday singled out another senior federal law enforcement official for criticism for having suggested "without any evidence" that crime is on the rise because police officers have become less aggressive in the face of heightened public scrutiny of police behavior.
Chuck Rosenberg, the acting chief of the Drug Enforcement Administration, expressed that view on Wednesday, telling reporters that "thereâs something to" the notion that the police are holding back out of fear of appearing in a video that could be widely shared and create controversy for the officer. Scrutiny of the police has significantly increased in the 15 months since the fatal shooting of Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager, by a white officer in Ferguson, Mo.
But the White House rejected the notion that a "Ferguson effect" might be driving a crime increase in some cities, repeating the same criticism it had leveled at James B. Comey, the director of the F.B.I., after he made a similar point in a speech last month. Josh Earnest, the White House press secretary, said flatly that "the evidence does not support the claim that somehow, our law enforcement officers all across the country are shirking their duties and failing to fulfill their responsibility to serve and protect."
Mr. Rosenberg, in a briefing for reporters on Wednesday, said that he had spoken confidentially with police officials in some cities and that he believed there was "some trepidation" by officers about confronting suspects for fear of ending up on a video.
"Rightly or wrongly, you become the next viral video," Mr. Rosenberg said, adding that "now you can do everything right and still end up on the evening news."
The antidrug agency had no immediate comment on the White House's blunt criticism of his remarks.

One reason I left years ago was the revolving door BS and utter nonsense in mandatory sentencing and number of new laws on the books every year.
The left is perennially irked.
To them the truth is irksome.
Democrats started the war on cops...
Democrats have stood with criminals for years, but an election’s coming and they’re hoping to hoodwink citizens one more time... That’s what this is about - democrats are running from who the really are - and what they’ve been doing to the country.
Unfortunately the “White House” as it is hilariously called (perhaps should be OCCUPANT of the White House) has an agenda, therefore cannot be believed beyond that focus on anything else.
Of course the occupant of the White House instilling fear, and anger of the police in specific communities hasn’t a thing to do with the recent overly cautious policing attitude. /S
Who you gonna believe? A veteran career law enforcement officer or Josh Earnest?
The interesting thing is that they are opening their mouths and saying it, in an Obama administration.
Sorta makes you think they believe there will be a conservative administration in the not-too-distant future, and they better establish conservative bona-fides before then.
0bama has always wanted to neuter the police, and his efforts in that regard are paying off, for him, and the criminal element. The flip side is that he doesn’t want anyone to know that is what he has wanted all along, otherwise, he’d be strutting around and taking credit for the reduced policing.
SO... two people who work in LAW ENFORCEMENT say it is true, while someone who is NOT in LAW ENFORCEMENT and is expressly violating all the laws on the books, says it is not.
Which one would I believe ?
Gee, I guess the only thing you can say about police is that they ‘acted stupidly’, and make sure you say it before all the facts are in...
To late to establish Conservative bona-fides for these pukes who have allowed this for the last 7 years.
FIRE EVERYONE ABOVE the GS 3 level.
...”singled out another senior federal law enforcement official for criticism for having suggested “without any evidence” that crime is on the rise...”
You have to wonder about how damning the evidence would have to be given the history of this administration.
