Aides to Jeb Bush and the super PAC backing him are so freaked out and betrayed by Sen. Marco Rubio's rise in the Republican presidential polls and Bush's decline, they are setting aside up to $20 million to sink Rubio's campaign and previewing an attack ad criticizing Bush's former protege as too extreme on abortion to get elected president, report Maggie Haberman and Michael Barbaro at The New York Times, citing at least three people "privy to" discussions and preparations in the Bush camp.
Bush and Rubio are facing off in a Republican debate on Tuesday, and given how poorly Bush's jab at Rubio went in the previous debate - Rubio was ready with a preplanned counterpunch - political Twitter is confused as to why Team Bush would be previewing another attack.
Mike Murphy, the top strategist for Bush's Right to Rise super PAC, had a simpler explanation, telling The Times that "part of running for president is you have to put your big boy pants on and get vetted on the issues, so we know we don't have a dud candidate running against Hillary Clinton."

Losing is my middle name!
Stick a fork into both Jeb and Marco, both are DONE.
Smells like a setup.
This Bush/Rubio dustup is a classic win win.
I hope they tear each others hearts out.
Jeb the ultimate RINO is toast. Hopefully, so will be RINubio.
That tactic has already failed.
“Jebecito backers prep for invasion of Normandy by leaking plans to destroy Germans.”
Yeb! and Young Yeb! are both traitors to the citizens.
They are more concerned for citizens of OTHER countries who broke into OUR country than they are about the citizens of THIS country.
Rubio! Rubio! I want to see sorted over Havana damnit.
I keep thinking ole tippy toed Jebbie will drop out to save himself a huge embarrassment, but I guess his ego knows no bounds.
I think he’s pitiful.
Jeb needs to demonstrate the capacity, the desire, and the energy to lead the party against the common foe. He will not do this by tearing down other Republicans. He needs to transcend his primary opponents, not drag them down into mud wrestling. Doesn’t anyone in Jebworld understand that? Everyone else does.
That will be his undoing.
What a great use of his campaign’s money. I sure don’t want him with any of his grubby paws on MINE.
Helpless pawns on a chessboard that neither of them realized was being moved by the money men.
The board has been kicked over and most of the pieces are scattered.
Again with the “big boy pants”. More wet kisses? This sounds more like Aunt Matilda than a former governor of Florida.
He needs to bite the head off of a Baby Hitler doll for real credibility at this point...
BOTH are "Open Borders" RINO LOSERS! I honestly can't think of a single thing Marco Amnesty Rubio has done.
I've read that Rubio's main appeal is that some women find him attractive, never mind that he has absolutely no accomplishments and can't be bothered to do the job he has now, but I will not vote if senor el Jebbo somehow steals the nomination.
I disagree. I know conservatives don’t like Rubio either, but Jeb’s tactics reek of vendetta and have a good chance of backfiring. Rubio did a good job deflecting it last debate, and turning it against Jeb. The only problem is that this all detracts from whatever message Rubio is trying to get out. I think Rubio can crush this if he finds a way to give a strong, memorable retort similar to how he did in the last debate (”Jeb you have stupid advisers who convinced you that attacking me is good for you, it isn’t”) and then each subsequent attack deliver something Reaganesque like the way Reagan did “there you go again, Jeb” before heading off into a discussion of policy vs personality. It will make Rubio look above the fray and Jeb look weak and wounded. if done correctly by the next debate Rubio could be into double digits and Jeb off the stage. This is not support for Rubio, just my analysis of how it could shake out.
So. I guess the attack will be that Rubio is extreme on pro-life because he wouldn’t kill baby Hitler.
