I believe that the moral damage done to the slave owner was actually GREATER than that done to the slave in most cases. Certainly their were truly evil slave owners, but there is a lot of evidence that many slave owners had a difficult reconciling slavery with their own consciences.

I saw that point repeatedly expressed by Mary Chesnut in her biography of the Civil War. Of course being part of the southern aristocracy, she was nor able to measure the relative moral damage.
