It’s not often that Ted Cruz struggles with his words. But during an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper, the GOP presidential candidate spoke about his half-sister’s struggle with addiction, and their family’s inability to save her.
Cruz told Tapper that following her parents’ divorce, his sister Miriam became angry and turned to drugs:
“Her whole life she lived basically as an angry teenager. She was sort of frozen emotionally as a rebellious teenager … She struggled her whole life with drug and alcohol addiction.”
In the Texas Senator’s book, A Time for Truth, Cruz recalled his sister’s struggle, writing:
“I sometimes found it hard to reconcile the bright, fun and charismatic sister I adored with the person who would lie to me without hesitation and who stole money from her teenage brother to feed her various addictions[.]”
After detailing his experience of trying to retrieve his sister from a crackhouse, Cruz went on to explain how his sister, Miriam, wouldn’t budge.
“She was just angry. She wouldn’t change, and with an addict you can’t make them change if they’re unwilling to get treatment, if they’re unwilling to walk a different path.”
Cruz’s addiction discussion comes hot on the heels of several other candidates addressing the issue, as well. After Chris Christie’s candid town hall video was viewed over 5 million times, Carly Fiorina and Jeb Bush also shared their personal family connections to addiction.
Ted Cruz’ parents were divorced? No way should he be President. /sarc
LOL you just know that some of the lower primates will climb on board that train.
I didn’t know Ted Cruz had a half sister. I thought the father left the family when Ted was little, then got religion and came back. Where did a half sister come from?
Also listened to Christie yesterday talking about his collgege buddy who had everything and ended up dying of an an overdose of Percoset at 50.
Great story accept one thing....he stated halfway through the story that they (him and his classmates from college) tried to help his friend but “there was just no help there”.
Total BS, there is help all over the place if you want it but it is only successful if the addict/alcoholic has a sincere desire to change. Christie falls into the same trap that liberals often do, they always assign the blame to “society” rather than on the person responsible.
Rehab, AA etc are highly available and successful but only if the abuser truely wants the help.
That sort of wisdom seems to be only understood by those who have had direct contact with it. You would think it would be obvious, but humans have an amazing ability to distort the obvious to fit their preferred explanation. Blame shifting is a favorite human sport.
It appears that each candidate is trying to outdo one another with their personal tragedies. Overcoming adversity is admirable, but overcoming someone else’s tragedy isn’t a reason to be president. This seems to be the 2016 version of “boxers vs. briefs.”
Yup. They have to admit to it or there is virtually no help.
I got a sister that has been a drunk since forever and she is 76. How the hell she made it this long is outside of me.
I wonder if they started with pot?
The MSM will get right on this story, combing through every single shred of evidence and interview anyone remotely associated with it, find that Cruz’s sister wasn’t ‘emotionally frozen’ but rather ‘lacked a conscious’, and tomorrow will declare Cruz a liar.
Both of Cruz’s parents, Rafael Cruz and Eleanor Darragh Wilson, were married to others before they married in 1969.
Cruz, 44, had two half-sisters from his father’s earlier marriage. One, Miriam Cruz, died in 2011 at age 49, in Collingdale, Pa., a Philadelphia suburb. The medical examiner ruled it an accidental death from taking a combination of prescription medicines....
The other half-sister, Roxana Cruz, 52, is a medical doctor, who practices as an internist in Greenville, Texas, 45 miles northeast of Dallas....

On his mother’s side Cruz had a half-brother, Michael Wilson (1960 - 1965), who died before Cruz was born. Cruz learned of the deceased sibling from his mother during his teenage years.

Real tragedy happens when the addicted/depressed/lost whatever we want to label them, actively seek help and go thru years of treatment and take personal risks to get well but eventually to succumb to the demons that grip them.
Yep. It’s totally stupid. Will bring them nothing but grievance from the media and won’t garner them 1 vote.
The story is included, as it should have been, in Cruz’s autobiography so it’s not something he and his campaign necessarily decided to push out there. If they have then I’d agree it’s pointless. Either way it won’t garner the kind of hagiographic treatment that, for example, Gore received for his maudlin story about the lung cancer death of his sister and his supposed bedside epiphany about the evil tobacco weed. Nothing can be allowed to interfere with the Ministry of Propaganda narrative.
How long before the liberals, knowing better, claim that this isn’t true, as they’ve done to Dr. Carson?
Yeah, it's a Presidential Campaign, not the Olympics!
