ok , thank you for the backstory .
I retract my ill informed remarks .
Thanks
He didn’t write a book, what is cited here is what he told the man who DID write the book.
Just thought you’d like to know.
And thank you. U.S. Grant was a great general and a great man.
he captured my great grandfather at Vicksburg
Both of my uncles were killed and buried at Vicksburg like so many others without a headstone marking their deaths. And there is no record of them receiving a pension.
Grant's treatment of Lee at Appomattox made me a fan of his.
My GG along with all other CS forces surrendered by Pemberton at Vicksburg were , after a short time , given a Union parole . Asked to sign and swear to never take up arms against the union again . He did so and was released and allowed to walk home ( which wasn’t very far - Central MS) In his records I can find no sign that he ever broke this parole agreement , he went off the pay records . He did not desert ,although after a time his records began to declare him absent . He stood good to his word . I think after 3 years of war he’d had enough anyway . He was at Shiloh and enjoyed Sherman’s camp’s victuals on the 1st evening . Speaking of Sherman , he was at Vicksburg too. Now there’s a rat for you . I can respect Grant but I hate Sherman .
