As recounted by Justice Joseph Story in his famous Commentaries on the Constitution, the purpose of the natural born Citizen clause was thus to "cut[] off all chances for ambitious foreigners, who might otherwise be intriguing for the office; and interpose[] a barrier against those corrupt interferences of foreign governments in executive elections."

John Jay in corresponding with George Washington on the subject, stated that it was particularly appropriate to limit the Presidency to natural born citizens because the President was the Commander-in-Chief of America's military and the natural born citizen requirement therefor would act as a check on our military from ever falling into the hands of a foreigner.

This little girl is not a foreigner. She’s American. She has never known any other language beside English.

Even so, I hardly think the reasoning behind either Jay’s or Story’s opinion holds water.
