I was taught to have it “broken” as shown, but to have the barrel down and in front. The shorter stock sticking out behind you is less of a hazard. Although it took me awhile to get over my aversion of getting finger prints/oil all over the barrels.

Which is exactly what the guy on Twitter was talking about - he's criticizing Cruz for not having the barrel down and in front. So, he's not wrong, though he's making a big deal out of something that shouldn't be a big deal...

To be fair to Al, he simply seems to be adjusting the sling on the rifle. The picture can be interpreted as thought the barrel is pointed at his head, it is almost certainly pointed off to his left, a bit away from his head.

The rifle is almost certainly unloaded, as there does not appear to be a magazine in the magazine well.
