And on the other side of that front is Obama, Saudi Arabia and unfortunately our military.
The Alawites probably started off as a late Roman empire Gnostics and Neo-Platonist sect (they were like the Confucianists in China in that they made philosophers and their works into a form of religion). They are probably the offshoots of Pythagoreans who believed in reincarnation as the Alawites do.

Well, I have always thought that by the time of Islam the Zoroastrian religion was probably more of a royal Persian cult than the everyday religion of people. The Persians had just lost the first holy war ever fought against the Byzantines/Romans (the Romans were transitioning into what the west calls Byzantium) when they were on the verge of winning and that must have shocked their system? It is a guess. We don’t have any info as to how every day people converted to Islam. When the Mongols arrived - they were hostile to Muslims and would have allowed the Persian people to convert without Muslim reprisals but the Persians by then adopted Islam - but it was Shia Islam which probably adopted the most popular parts of Zoroastrianism.
Just a theory - I am a history buff.
Since Israel is against Assad because he is aligned with Iran and Hezbollah, Israel is also in that mix along with the Gulf Arabs, the Neocons-military industrial complex along with McCain-Graham group and their anti-Russia stance.
