Newly-elected Speaker Paul Ryan said in an interview that aired Sunday on CBS' "Face the Nation" that he's "redesigning" his leadership job.
"I'm redesigning this job. I don't think it can work going forward like it's worked in the past. I can't pick up where John (Boehner) left off. It has to be done differently," Ryan said, referring to Rep. John Boehner's, R-Ohio, recently ended tenure as speaker.
The House elected Ryan as speaker last Thursday and Boehner resigned from his leadership post and congressional seat.
Ryan told host John Dickerson that he wasn't elected "dictator of the House" and has plans to implement a bottom up approach that House conservatives have lobbied for.
During the interview, the new speaker laid out his priorities to return to "regular order" and pass legislation using the committee process, seek common ground with other lawmakers, serve as a check on the Obama administration's power and to present bold policy proposals.
Ryan appeared to rule out passing an bipartisan immigration reform bill under President Obama.
"Look, I think it would be a ridiculous notion to try and work on an issue like this with a president we simply cannot trust on this issue," Ryan said. "He tried to go it alone, circumventing the legislative process with his executive orders so that is not in the cards. I think if we reach consensus on how best to achieve border and interior enforcement security, I think that's fine."
But then Ryan said Republicans need to take "policy risks" and named tax reform as one option and an ObamaCare replacement plan as another.
Ryan was elected after weeks of internal turmoil within the House Republican conference. He told Face the Nation, however, that the infighting was "necessary to unify our conference, unify our party."

The only change Ryan will make from Boehner will be donning his knee pads and lube without all the gauche tears.
Pffffffffffft!
Ryan just helped fund Planned Parenthood through 2017, so the press question was stupid. And the new Speaker’s comments were hypocritical.
“Watch him closely. He cannot be trusted.
His loyalty is to The Cheap Labor Express.”
“Ryan told host John Dickerson that he wasn’t elected “dictator of the House” and has plans to implement a bottom up approach that House conservatives have lobbied for.”
Agree completely. He’s completely in the tank for the Uniparty Democrats and RINOs. I don’t trust him any farther than Nanzi Pelosi can throw him.
What he says above sounds like the Clintons promising the “most ethical administration ever” and Obama the “most transparent” .... Ryno’s going to try and steamroll amnesty, among other things, by leaving the heavy lifting to the Democrats and their Ryno allies.
We conservatives should be making plans for a new party, plainly put, a Conservative party.
The GOP-e is a dead party walking. Whigs II. RIP
Regarding pre existing conditions, you misunderstand. I'm not suggesting a subsidy, I'm suggesting a reset to 2008. If people had insurance then, they should have some path to get it back. You are inadvertently advocating a massive government giveaway to insurance companies - it is classic crony capitalism. People had long term contracts with insurance companies. Obamacare broke the contracts. If you don't have an Obamacare replacement, the insurance companies are gifted new leverage to renegotiate over individuals.
Everyone has a plan - until they first get hit.
Let’s see how the next 3 months go and see if he still is as hopeful.
I like what I hear so far from Ryan. And I think freepers should hold their fire for awhile.
“Ryan appeared to rule out passing an bipartisan immigration reform bill under President Obama. ‘Look, I think it would be a ridiculous notion to try and work on an issue like this with a president we simply cannot trust on this issue,’ Ryan said. ‘He tried to go it alone, circumventing the legislative process with his executive orders so that is not in the cards. “appeared to rule out.” Right.
“if we reach consensus on how best to achieve border and interior enforcement security, I think that’s fine”
And who is “we”, Lyin’ Ryan?
Paul Ryan you ignorant, marxist, we don’t want transformation. We want the republic that is our birthright and our duty to uphold.
He won’t defund PP. If he can’t do that, he can’t do anything. It is the lowest of the low bars.
I’m not advocating for the retention of Medicare and Medicaid. I’m acknowledging they will exist with the repeal of Obamacare.
As for resetting for preexisting conditions per 2008, first it isn’t feasible. Second, even if it were feasible, a government mandate to force some insurer to accept is a de facto subsidy by those participating through the same insurer who do not have the conditions.
How is it a subsidy if, for example, the repeal of obamacare mandated that insurers accept back previous customers without restriction? But more importantly, why do you find that very small subsidy (if you think it is one) unacceptable, while there are other subsidies that are probably 100 times as big happening via Medicare and Medicaid? If you want to be an absolutist, be one and get the government out of healthcare entirely.
Epic failure ...
As for preexisting conditions, requiring a new insurer to accept preexisting conditions is a de facto subsidy by those other insureds who do not have the conditions but are paying higher premiums to cover the costs associated with such. And to have the federal government cover the costs of insuring the preexisting conditions through a private insurer in the alternative would put the taxpayer on the hook for it, i.e. another subsidy.
No, the grand old one that we had here in Wisconsin that actually offered everything people say they want — portability, ownership of the plan, high deductibes for those who want that, affordability, etc. has had to shut its doors after more than 100 years because of Obamacare.
What is wrong with cash on the barrel head for health care? And if you want insurance, get government out of the way and you could buy any kind of insurance you want. I question why anyone needs health insurance other than catastrophic anyway.
yeah a chickem in every pot
On FNC Wallace, he said he was not elected dictator of the House,......... and I swear he did a little smirk.
