It's been 18 years since Pat Tillman, who gave up his NFL paycheck and eventually his life to serve his country following 9/11, took the field at Arizona State University, but he was back in spirit Thursday night.
The Sun Devils' "Salute to Service" night had the home team donning custom uniforms that bore the former linebacker's name and special new "Darks Ops" cleats, which adidas claims were inspired by the U.S. Army Rangers and Tillman. Although Arizona State lost in triple overtime to Oregon, the star of the game was the rugged patriot killed by friendly fire 11 years ago.
"This special tribute honors Pat's example as an athlete, scholar and soldier, while raising awareness and academic support for the Tillman Scholars who are carrying on his legacy," said Tillman's widow, Marie, who heads the Pat Tillman Foundation.

The crowd cheered hard and long when ASU took the field with every player having the name TILLMAN on their jerseys.
Tillman was quite leftwing and would probably be involved in all sorts of activism, especially in regards to the military, people here would find disagreeable if things had gone differently and he decided to keep a high profile. At the same time from all accounts he served honorably.
18?? years
Since he played at ASU.
Since he was a player at ASU.
I am kind of ambivilent about the guy myself. As a fellow vet I honor his service but his activism had no place in the US Army.
âWe preach the value of passion and character to our players and no one embodies those qualities more than Pat Tillman,” said Todd Graham.
Tell that to his players at Tulsa and Pitt.
I work with his former English teacher...
From Leland High in San Jose?
Yep
I went to Simonds Elementary and would have gone to Bret Harte and then Leland, but we moved. I was a grade ahead of Pat, though I don’t know if he went to Simonds...
“Tillman was quite leftwing”.
Which is strange because the vast majority of the military (at least the ones I knew when I was in) were republican. Democrats cut the military and are afraid to fight wars, therefore most military members are not democrat. President Nixon gave the military a huge pay raise in 1971 or 72, the lower in rank you were the bigger raise you got. I was an E-4 and my pay almost doubled. I am proud to say I’ve never voted for a democrat in my life, in any local or national election.
