Two Russian warplanes flew within one mile of the USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier, forcing the U.S. Navy to launch four fighter jets in response Tuesday, a Navy spokesman told Fox News.
The USS Reagan was sailing in international waters east of the Korean peninsula, Stars and Stripes reports. It adds that the U.S. is currently engaged in joint military exercises with South Korea.

Within 1 mile?? Where is CAP?? Unacceptable and the commander should be fired.
You beat me to it!
They launched “after” a one mile pass? Why didn’t they launch at 20 miles out?
Boy Russians has ball go after ship that named after President that b****slap Communists in to heap of history
The Russians must want to die or somethin...
So you have seen this documentary too!
The U.S. Navy launched four armed fighter jets to intercept two Russian Tu-142 Bear aircraft that were flying near the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan in the Pacific Ocean, the Navy said Thursday.
The four F/A-18 fighter jets were sent as “standard operating procedure” to escort planes flying near Navy ships, according to a Navy statement.
The Russian aircraft came within one nautical mile and were flying at 500 feet in altitude while the 100,000-ton warship was participating in a bilateral training exercise with South Korea on Tuesday.
The Navy said a ship escorting the Reagan during exercises near the Korean Peninsula hailed the Russian planes but did not get a response.
“The Navy said a ship escorting the Reagan during exercises near the Korean Peninsula hailed the Russian planes but did not get a response.”
The incident is of concern due to it being a Russian violation of the protocols designed to avoid conflicts and accidents. The Russian failure to establish communications with the air traffic controller managing the air space and air traffic around the aircraft carrier task force risks mid-air collisions. Such behavior is regarded as unnecessary, unprofessional, and threatening conduct.
It is a probe on both sides. More or less routine. If a Russian carrier group appeared 20-30 miles offshore mainland USA, you can be sure we would have a reciprocal response.
I don’t care if they saw them coming from the moon.
Letting them get a mile away is ridiculous. A missile fired that close could hit the ship in seconds.
“Letting them get a mile away is ridiculous. A missile fired that close could hit the ship in seconds.”
The current Law of the Sea permits the aircraft to make such close approaches. The U.S. Navy does so as well when on reconnaisance. The difference is in the protocols used to avoid incidents, mid-air collisions, and accidents.
That sounds like someone screwed the pooch badly. Sure hope they do not let the Iranians pull that crap off.............
“....two Russian Tu-142 Bear aircraft...came within one nautical mile and were flying at 500 feet in altitude...”
They’re lucky someone didn’t knock them out of the sky with a baseball bat!
