As early as high school in the 70’s, I had an English lit teacher recharacterize “myth” as meaning an image, which could be true or not. Thus, she said that Elvis was a myth, meaning the persona surrounding him.

Softening us up for what would come later.

Mythology gives us shared narratives to interpret the world. Myths are not untrue. Quite the opposite, they embody truths that allow us to find meaning in our lives.
