Welcome to FR...
The military got politicized and that was the end of it.
Politicians don’t want to do what’s necessary because they don’t want to see body bags, but that’s the reality.
Instead, this giant ELINT, mechanized Orwellian nightmare has been built and it’s not even effective outside of trampling the Constitution.
World War II was the last total war, in Vietnam they didn’t even press for censorship or a lot of wartime authority used by FDR.
From your mouth to God’s ears
Yes, this is what needs to happen, but will it? No just no, but hell no. It's going to take some kind of massive defeat/invasion/EMP attack/etc to get this nation's collective head out of its collective a**, and fix the military. But it ain't gonna happen until we're so grievously wounded we may not recover.
This is not "their" fault, it's ours. We let it happen. We sat back, flapping our gums, moaning and groaning, wringing our hands, while the Left destroyed all we love. It's our fault, 'cause we did nothing but talk.
Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
They’ve booted the battlefield hardened Majors and Captains, and retired the conservative Generals.
We have a hollow force and it is not by accident that their future is bleak.
The United States Army does not want to be saved.
Ping
The present administration is assuring us that in the next big war nuclear weapons will have to be used, with a weakened conventional forces there is no other alternative (other than defeat).
“Anyone who has ever served a day in the US military knows we used to be the guys with a limitless logistics chain that could produce anything from Chicklets to M1 tanks. We had an endless supply of personal gear, chow, water, coffee, light equipment, heavy equipment, trucks, tanks, planes, ships.”
How long could that level of spending be maintained? We tried to have guns & butter, and ended up with European tax levels. The “borrowing of equipment” seems to be related to NATO exercises in Europe; the least the Europeans can do is provide the gear to defend their continent. That isn’t unprecedented; in WWI the French asked for MEN; they had machine guns, planes, etc. - they were running out of MEN.
When I was in the Army, they had Chicklets and Marlboros in the C-rations.
Just sayin’
Col. Hackworth coined the term “perfumed princes”. He was run out of supposed circles of influence. Interesting, that term is mentioned as a meme- given, the last few crowds of academy cowards, and their ilk. Say, from about the mid-eighties and worsening in the last 20 years.
What does the academy have to do with your statement?
Close your eyes, and Guess, really hard.
Emerson was an idiot. His damn rock concerts called gunstock where he allowed the troops to smoke dope to include hash plus the pills the jerks took were key to sad ass performance. Colin Powell thought Emerson was the cats ass cause Emerson gave the AA do nothing a BN on the DMZ. 73-74 was drug city and troops without high school degrees. Vietnam, only a few years earlier, had damn good troops until about 69.
“How long could that level of spending be maintained?”
Forever, if we were not worried about paying welfare to illegals and buying sex change operations for transgendered soldiers.
I never could understand how the base commissaries could not support themselves. Privatization is the answer.
You know of course it’s a ridiculous generalization.
Good article. Thank you.
