This is what I don’t understand. There are at least 300 million firearms in the USA with at least 56% of the population who love having them and the right to use them against tyranny large and small. If the establishment tries to confiscate them don’t they understand it will be complete suicide for them to do so? Don’t they know they are automatically signing their own death warrants?

Yes they ARE 'out to lunch' Jack, the fact is, the federal government has NEVER attempted a national registration and/or confiscation of all privately owned firearms, they have tried all sorts of incremental approaches to make it as difficult as possible for law abiding citizens to obtain and carry firearms as guaranteed under the Constitution, and they have relied on the more liberal States (Illinois, New York plus the District of Corruption, just to name some) to do their dirty work for them with unConstitutionally restrictive measures which become established law unless and until such laws are overturned by the courts and even then the appeals process (by the state governments) mean that the illegal laws will remain in place until the SCOTUS finally rules on it.

Because the federal government has had limited success at inhibiting our rights under the Second Amendment, they cannot believe that there could be a mass uprising of normally law abiding citizens should they attempt such a totalitarian move against We The People.

They may 'war game' for such an event but they refuse to accept not just the possibility, but the PROBABILITY that an attempt to disarm the public would be met with massive armed resistance which would likely trigger that Second American Revolution that keeps getting talked about.

Consider the people of Romania in 1989, oppressed for decades under that Communist shitbag Nikolai Ceausescu and his malodorous wife Elena, they finally rose up in December of that year and said 'enough is enough' and successfully revolted, the military forces sided with the people, and THEY had far fewer privately owned firearms than Americans do.

So to answer your post Jack, the government does NOT have a clear understanding of the situation, they very possibly WILL attempt such a damn foolish move at some future point (and IMHO, it will be sooner rather than later), and when they do, there will be holy Hell to pay and whoever gave the order to initiate 'Operation Confiscation' or whatever they call it, will end up hanging from a noose by the time it's all over.
