If he was called a Communist, it most likely had to do with his disgraceful treatment of Patton. Patton wanted to take the Germans and teach the Ruskies a lesson. Eisenhower took up for the Russians. Obviously, Patton was right, but by then he had been murdered.
The Birchers were ostracized from the party in part because they promoted a theory that Ike was a communist.
