Syrian President Bashar al-Assad: Facing down rebellion (still standing today)
BBC News ^ | 21 October 2015

President Bashar al-Assad of Syria has confounded many observers by holding on to power for more than four years in the face of a rebellion by a large part of the population.

Unlike his former counterparts in Tunisia and Egypt, when protests against his government began in March 2011 he gave orders to crush the dissent, rather than tolerate it, and he refused to meet protesters' demands.

The brutal crackdown by the security forces did not, however, stop the protests and eventually triggered an armed conflict that the UN says has so far left more than 250,000 people dead.

More than 11 million others have been forced from their homes as forces loyal to Mr Assad and those opposed to his rule battle each other - as well as jihadist militants from Islamic State (IS).

In retrospect, if Assad did not order a brutal crackdown on the protestors back in 2011, he would had been overthrown. And that would end up getting his tribe, the Alawites killed.

Lets kick this treasure hunt off right ...

Initially seen by the domestic and international community as a potential reformer,[12] this expectation ceased when Assad ordered mass crackdowns and military sieges on ARAB SPRING protesters, leading to the Syrian Civil War. The Syrian opposition, the United States, Canada, the European Union and the majority of the Arab League have called for al-Assad’s resignation from the presidency.

The Arab Springs movement was to blow up all the countries in the regions political status and put it all into motion or “play: as the stick market calls it...

Benghazi was a part of the Arab Spring fiasco, and only now does the real picture begin to emerge...

There are more, look at the references cited on each line, there you will find traces of what is real...

He was elected as a member of the Baath party. You may not like him but it is their country...

And his one is ours, so focus here and not somewhere else...

That is precisely what they want us to do, become distracted...

The same thing happened in Libya, and Egypt. When will the UN charge Hussein with international war crimes?

And that would end up getting his tribe, the Alawites killed. Along with Syria's Christians, and probably any Druze and "orthodox" Shi'ites as well.

The Alawites are not really a tribe, but a semi-Christianized variant of Shia Islam. I suspect they were originally cryto-Christians who became more Islamic over time. They have a ritual commemoration of Ali, which involves drinking wine, identified as the "blood of Ali", and often have what are normally Christian given names (for example, Bashar is the Arabic version of Basil, and is a name common only among Arabic speaking Christians and Alawites.)
