Europe has spent the better part of two generations lavishing itself with freebies realized by liberating themselves of the expense of national defense because of US protection under NATO. Shipping lanes remain clear of pirates courtesy of the US Navy. Pre-positioned combatants and munitions were maintained in Europe, courtesy of US taxpayers.

But for the promise of US big-brotherness, Europe would not be able to luxuriate in its wealth. And, as Europe expended precious money on social spending, the left in the US pointed to Europe and exclaimed about how generous was European socialism. The never bothered to mention that the social spending was enabled by the US taxpayer's promise of military engagement and the US taxpayer's ongoing expense to keep the world relatively at peace.
