IIRC The contract was originally awarded to a consortium that included Bell or Boeing working with an Italian company (Augusta?).

That award was eventually cancelled,in part, due to criticism that the VIP helicopter was being manufactured overseas.

Someone please help me fill in the blanks here.

AugustaWestland (sp?) and Lockheed had the 1st contract. airframe was by Augusta and assembly and electronics by Lockheed. Owego, NY.
